Mrs. Johnston's
3rd Grade
In third grade at WCA, students experience a dynamic and engaging year filled with fun, learning, and memorable activities. They begin by mastering cursive writing, building foundational math skills like long division, rounding, and solving two-step word problems. As they learn multiplication tables (0-12), students are rewarded with a banana split party for each successful test. Social Studies brings excitement as students study the Vikings and Ancient Rome, dressing up in themed costumes like Vikings and togas to bring history to life. In science, hands-on experiments cover topics such as the human body, lights and optics, sound, and ecology. The class also delves into exciting dissections, including owl pellets and cow eyes, to explore the world of anatomy.
Third graders also get involved in community service, delivering gifts to the food bank and visiting the donut shop. They take part in field trips to the pumpkin patch, the Kansas Learning Center for Health, the Mid-American All Indian Center, and the zoo or Tanganyika, enriching their learning outside the classroom. Additionally, the class cares for desk pets throughout the year, creating a sense of responsibility and fun. One of the most heartwarming traditions is the Valentine’s Day visit to a local nursing home, where students deliver roses to residents, spreading joy and kindness. All in all, third grade at WCA offers a year full of hands-on learning, creativity, and heartwarming experiences.
